Y-O

I LOVE this song and video. It was one of the first non-RUN-DMC hiphop songs I ever heard in high school (late to the party as ever; thanks, Jonathan Scott) and recently bought the 12" single on eBay for $20 (and . A bargain at twice the price! Also, I can't decide how I feel about the fact that 85% of the hiphop I really, truly love was made 15 years ago or earlier. That's not true of rock, which has traveled through the ages for me. Rap is another story, f'real. I'm sure it's my damn fault.

I'm pretty much the same way with my hip-hop favorites. I used to think it was because hip-hop was more "socially conscious" then, but I think that's bullshit. After all, I heart Big Daddy Kane's "I Get The Job Done" for all its ridiculous braggadocio as much as I love mid-80s PE for its social commentary.

I have a completely ill-informed (that is lacking any proper knowledge of music theory) idea that what makes a piece of pop music "great" is aural space (that, and handclaps). The 1980s-early-1990s era of hip-hop has plenty of that "space," and I think it's catchy as hell.

And "Self-Destruction" totally kicks the ass of "We're All In The Same Gang."

I don't think it's your fault, but I do think there's still some great hip-hop out there that's just been driven deep undergound (www.undergroundhiphop.com) by the ham-fisted mainstream music killer robot.
Still, I miss the Naitive Tongues, KMD, Gang Starr, Eric B., Special Ed... I miss the days when protest rap actually sorta kinda meant something. Kinda...? Can I get a witness?
When sampling wasn't illegal. When the east coast had something to offer. When pants were puffy and fades were hi-top...

Wait, I think I got something in my eye...

Hello Sean. I'm Jaime Henriquez, citizen of this strange, sunny and dark, cruel but inviting latinamerican capital called Bogota. Don't really have a comment on this particular post. Truth is, I just finished reading your MSN article on the Ten Worst Movie Titles. I look at those msn articles from time to time, when signing out of my hotmail, and had never ever found anything that was worth the while in both the writting and the subject. But, man, your articled amazed me. You had me cracking with laughter the whole way through it. Most of the critics i've read (we don't have good movie critics in Colombia) are either stupidly indulgent, amazingly dull, or surprisingly hostile. Your critical prose seems to find its way in the middle of this triangle: when you elevate, you do it with prudence and objectivity, and when you attack, you do it elegance, with academy, with a sarcastic grace that's difficult to find now a days. I was about to search for something on the internet, and when finished with your article i couldn't remember what it was, so I decided to write to you, and this was the only way I could find. I am eager to start reading the other articles and reviews posted on your website. My mail is jimmyhenri@gmail.com, I would really like to start up a dialogue with you and hear what you have to say about certain movies I love and hate. Congrats on your Joni Mitchell book. I myself have a poetry book recently published only here in Colombia (for now, hopefully). It is all in spanish but I would be more than happy to try a translation of a couple of poems if you're interested. Thanks for your time. Jaime

Hi! We caught your show last night in Montreal opening up for Robyn Hitchcock. We were sitting at the table right in front of the steps, where you two did the encore. I was the girl in the rainbow scarf and glasses.

We had a question regarding on two of the songs you performed. What are the names of the songs you sang after the anecdote about the faded pop Canadian pop singer in the hot tub with you? My husband think the first one is by Jackson Browne and all I can remember lyric-wise of the second one is "tequila to drink and avocado to eat" which, armed with Google, is getting me no where. Please help!

Again, fantastic show. I have seen Robyn many times, but you were the most entertaining opening act I have ever seen for him. Thank you for coming to Montreal!

Hey, how come you played at the Basement in Nashville earlier this week (according to their calendar, 11/26) and I didn't hear about it anywhere?

I feel like a chump.
